I was recently challenged to find and shoot a new outfit that cost no more than $5. My deadline was 24 hours. Along with me to help document the hunt for the perfect outfit was the new Canon EOS M5, their super lightweight mirrorless camera. This challenge forced me to think outside the box. The first thing that came to mind was a second hand store down the street. I was looking for a skirt I could wear as a dress. The bigger the better. I knew I would have to get crafty and patch something together. My mom taught me how to sew and I made my own tops for school dances, so I’m comfortable with altering pieces.
Luckily, I stumbled upon a matching skirt set. I couldn’t afford both pieces so I walked away with the skirt. Cost: $4.99!!!
The skirt was perfect because it had a lining. The first layer of the skirt was made from of beautiful silk. It was out of season but the print was perfect!
I was in a time crunch so I had to get creative. I know I wanted to wear the skirt as a dress. I could wear it two ways. As a strapless dress (no alterations needed) or as a halter backless dress.
I wanted a challenge. So I chose the latter. I knew I had a piece of black ribbon and some safety pins at home. I would have sewed it but I was fighting the clock.
I pulled up the top silk layer of the skirt to use as the top of my dress and safety pinned the ribbon for my halter strap.
And voilà!
Tag you’re it! Think you can beat this? I challenge you to find a new $5 outfit and share your images by using #tagyoureit or email me and I’ll add your photo to this post. Have fun and get creative!
